  18. <p>     Steve the Tramp is described as a "reeking piece of filth"
  19. and a "public enemy" who will "use and abuse any young helpless
  20. prey he comes across." Most amazing of all, Steve the Tramp is
  21. also a child's toy. The 5-in. figurine, manufactured by
  22. California-based Playmates Toys, depicts a ragged street
  23. character from Disney's hit movie Dick Tracy. But the Rev.
  24. Christopher Rose, an Episcopal priest in Hartford who works with
  25. his city's homeless, thought Steve the Tramp's grotesque
  26. villainy was a cruel attack on his unfortunate clients.
  27. Particularly incensed by the lurid resume that adorned Steve the
  28. Tramp's packaging, Rose launched a campaign to stamp out the
  29. tramp. He got his point across to Disney and Playmates, which
  30. have decided to drop the terrifying toy. But the move comes too
  31. late to recall the product from retailers' shelves before
  32. Christmas.
